Storyboard

Location Report

This is where I am thinking about shooting some of my scenes for my music video.

This is south bank in London. I want to use this as a location to film some of the couple scenes for the beginning of my video. I have chosen this location because I think that it would be interesting to have londons scenery in the background.

I will be filming some of my scenes in a car and have scenes of it driving off.

Some of my scenes are going to be in a forest/ green area type of area where i will be focusing on nature and on the actors rather than having it in the city. I think that this would be very interesting to have due to the fact that it will benefit my video as it will have diversity in scenery.

Some of my scenes will be set in a house/ room and this will be the scenes that are crucial to my video as these will be the ones that show the couple during arguments and during flashbacks.

I will be using a street shot to capture movement, i think this will make my video look very modern and cool.

Practice shots

I decided to do some practice shots while it was raining so I could see how well my camera can capture rain drops. This is because I want to add scenes where its raining and so I wanted to get the best shots and get as much practice before the real filming begins.

Music video outline against lyrics.

This is my basic music video outline, it is a basic outline of each scene I want to do.
I have created this so that I have a clear view set out of what I want to create and I think this will help me when it comes to filming because I will have an outline of what I am meant to be filming. I may add new scenes or may take away scenes that are already there. I will do what I believe is best for the music video and the actors also.

Production Schedule

Production Schedule for 'Tears in the rain' - The Weeknd.
by Sharon Ortiz.

I have created my production schedule based on the basis of my music video, as I have not started filming yet I have not placed specific dates on my date column, this will soon change when I find out my specific filming days. I have decided to create this so that I have a steady base to which I can work along so i know exactly what to do each time i allocate a day to filming. I have split up the filming dates to certain actors so that I have a whole day filming with each character in order to film their scenes in much greater detail and not have other actors having to wait for their scenes. For scenes where more than one actor is required I have allocated scenes which require both actors so that again I can focus all of my attention on each scene and take more than one take so I have the perfect shot. I believe this production schedule will help me a lot to keep my time managed correctly as it is crucial for myself and my actors to get the best out of our time.

Logo

I have decided to create a logo as I feel this would make my work look much more professional. I have decided I am going to place this logo at the beginning of my music video as I want to show who made the music video clearly and make my music video feel unique to myself. I decided to make it a very simple logo and have chosen black and grey as I think these colours would not clash with anything in my music video. I decided to have SV which is the beginning letters of my name and tv as television. I got inspirations from MTV and the youtube phenomenon SBTV.
I had made another logo previously but felt like it wasn't as appropriate due to the fact that it is rather long and decided on this black and grey one to be my final logo. Below is the previous logo i was intending to use.

Below is an example of SBTV using their logo in one of their music videos.
This is something I intend to do at the beginning of my music video not so much all throughout.

Survey

This is the survey i have made for my music video's audience to fill out. I have put in several questions both about my chosen artist aswell as general questions about what they like in music videos. I will be handing these out to different people so i can manage to  get lots of different views so i can give the audience the best possible outcome with my music video.

These are my results from my Survey , I have looked through all of the answers that i have been given and am going to take this into consideration when I am making my final finished product.

Music Video Treatment.

Basic Outline
My basic outline for my music video is going to be very mysterious, the storyline is going to be about a couple who were in love but separated, its going to show both of their points of views but focusing mainly on the males point of view. It will include scenes of their happier moments aswell as scenes of them crying and feeling very sad, I want my music video to show emotion and to get the point of the song across as i think this is what a music video should be about. I am going to have a lot of different scenes of the male in different locations to give the video a mysterious element. I am going to include a few different scenes showing this point in their lives and have got a lot of exciting ideas on how to do so. I am going to have lots of different camera angles including mid shots, long shots and many more. I am hoping to have some scenes that will be really interesting with different lighting and try to make it very professional looking and give the viewer the best possible experience, i am very excited to film and edit this music video as i believe this project is something i am going to enjoy greatly.

R&B Codes & Conventions

R&B research

Different types of R&B

As you can see most of these video have things in common, for example they all tell a story and are heavily narrative. The like a boy video has a couple performance basedscenes where we see the female character singing the words. In the Drake video we see a heavily based narrative video where it is telling a story, although it is not specifically related to the lyrics of the song.
The ciara video breaks the codes and conventions of a typical r&b music video because she is not portrayed as a sex symbol most of the time. she is acting like a male and dancing like one to show the point of the song.

Mood Board

This is my mood board, i decided to have a black background because i would like to have some of my scenes in my video to be black and white as i think this is a really interesting way to add character to a music video, I have also added things like the lady in the shower because i want this to be part of my music video also. The broken heart symbolises the whole feeling of the song and the emotions which are represented in the video. I have added pictures of smoke as they are also a vital part of the video because  the weeknd is known for smoking and it is almost something I associate with him.
I have pictures of girls around a picture of a couple because this is also something which will be focused on in my music video when the lyrics turn to "now every girl i touch they all feel the same". I have also added pictures of him looking sad and upset as those are some of the scenes which i will have in my video. It all looks sort of mysterious and confusing which i believe is a big part of the weeknds music videos. I do not want to copy his videos but i do want to keep it relevant to his style as it is something i really enjoy and i believe i will enjoy making very much.

Song Choice - Tears In The Rain

I have chosen this song because I really enjoy it and have already envisioned what i want to do with it, i believe this song choice will benefit me due to the fact that i am quite free to do what i want because Abel doesn't have a lot of music videos but the ones he does have out are the type of videos i enjoy watching and therefore believe it is something i will enjoy creating.

Song lyrics

They all feel the same
Adjust to the fame
Cause no one will love you like her
It's pointless
Like tears in the rain
So now that she's gone
Embrace all that come
And die with a smile
Don't show the world how alone you've become
[x2]

When it's said and done
I already felt love
And I let it end up
Dying by itself
And when it's said and done
You were better off
You deserve real love
And I deserve to be by myself
Cause I've gone too far
And I started too young
To give up
And even if I changed
It would be too late
I exposed my ways
Now every girl I touch

They all feel the same
Adjust to the fame
Cause no one will love you like her
It's pointless
Like tears in the rain
So now that she's gone
Embrace all that come
And die with a smile
Don't show the world how alone you've become
They all feel the same

I should've let you leave
But, I let you watch me slip away
I could've set you free
But, I'm selfish
I watched you stay

She has no recollection
Of the life she had without me
She let it slip away, away, away
It's so sad it had to be this
She forgot the good things about me
She let it slip away, away, away
[x2]

They all feel the same
Adjust to the fame
Cause no one will love you like her
It's pointless
Like tears in the rain
So now that she's gone
Embrace all that come
And die with a smile
Don't show the world how alone you've become
[x2]

She has no recollection
Of the life she had without me
She let it slip away, away, away
It's so sad it had to be this
She forgot the good things about me
She let it slip away, away, away

Inspiration Video

Inspiration wise i feel like all of Abel's videos are awesome and if my own video looked anything like them i would be very happy, this video in particular i look up to because i love the edgy feel it has and the unique style, you dont see many music videos that look like this. i love the way the images cut and seem sort of disorientated and i feel like the lighting and the colours reflected in the music video are so interesting and it really intrigues me.

Artist Research

These are some of the weeknd's music videos, i think the use of different shots in both is very effective and makes the video very interesting to watch, also we get to see the type of attitude he gives off in both videos and it is something i want to mix and show both parts of in my own music video.

The lighting in the videos gives a really edgy vibe and it is something which i would love to do in my own music video as i think it gives off a really cool look to the video and takes it that extra step, i also love the overlays of imagery that they use in 'the zone' i think it is something which would attract your attention and make you want to keep watching, i will keep this in mind when it comes to my editing process as i do really like the way that this looks.

preliminary task. - Remember You're A Womble

This is a short music video myself and my group have created as our preliminary task, i did the filming and the editing while my group did the planning and acting. The whole emphasis of the video was to show the wombles appreciation to recycling so we added a lot of recyling clips into it but in different ways to ensure the video was interesting and fun to watch. If i could have done something different it would have been to make sure the lip syncing was a bit better as it doesnt flow very well with the music. One thing i do really like about this video is the beginning where it cuts to lots of different scenes and the person holding up the paper changes, i think it was a really cool thing to add to it and it gives it a exciting look and makes the audience want to continue watching the video.

Music Video Analysis.

How much of the video is narrative and how much is performance? Is there a clear line between the two?

This music video is mostly performance as they are not really performing the things which they are saying.

In what ways are these used; clothes, locations and colors? The clothes that are used in this video are obviously expensive which represents the type of performers that the two rappers are, there are locations which seem extremely wealthy and which you would only see rich people in, this reflects the image they want to portray in the way that they are showing wealth and power, the colour are all very bright and colourful since the overall place seems to be sunny and like paradise almost.

What is the overall style of this video?the overall style of this video seems to be the type where they are showing off their wealth and the material things they have, we see an example of this in the first couple scenes where the girl is counting money while sitting in this very expensive looking home. The thing i like about this music video is the amount of different shots they have, the way the camera angles are all very different and each scene is set out in a different area which keeps the audience interested and wanting to keep watching the video.

What image is the artist trying to present?the artist is trying to present a image of wealth and superior status where he has this big house and has multiple females which are the main interest of males in most music videos. The rapper is speaking about wealth, fashion, having new things and about cars. They are both trying to present the lifestyle which they are living which is one which many people would aspire to have.

What kind of audience is the artist trying to appeal to?the artist is trying to appeal to males who listen to rap and who aspire to be wealthy and have a lot of power and money. It seems like the type of music video which is trying to attract an audience of men who want the rich, lavish lifestyle that a lot of them want, the fact they are speaking about cars, new clothing and money shows the way they are living.

How important do you think this video is in the marketing of this artist?

I think that the video is important in the marketing of the artist because, although the song speaks of all these things and all this money without the video they would not be able to show it, so by having this video showing everything they are speaking of it really gets the audience's attention in the way that they can actually see what they should be aspiring to and they can see everything that this rapper has and this would attract people to see the video and therefore the artist would get a lot more views and more fans due to this.

How much of the video is narrative and how much is performance? Is there a clear line between the two? This video is a mixture of the two, we have scenes where they are showing the band playing their instruments and singing and then there are scenes in which they are showing the scenes being acted out, this causes it to be very entertaining and intriguing to watch.

In what ways are these used; clothes, locations and colors?the location of this video is in what seems to be a studio, its just a infinite white background where all the actors are acting and the band is playing, the clothes which they are all wearing are very simple and light, this seems unusual as the lyrics of the song are very deep and meaningful, maybe this was used so that it doesnt take away from what the video is about. the background colour is white and it seems to contrast the lyrics since they are so deep and powerful and can be rather dark.

What is the overall style of this video?the overall style of this video seems very clean and simple, like not a lot of money was spent on it, it seems like they are just trying to get their point across. it is simple and makes us just focus on the lyrics which are being said.

What image is the artist trying to present?the artists are trying to present a image of helping people, they do this by showing the different scenes where the actors are upset and then showing the scenes where they let go of the pain, they also use visual effect like animated writing and text showing things such as "breathe" "let go" which shows they are trying to help people let go of any pain they have or any anger.

What kind of audience is the artist trying to appeal to?I think that this would attract a wide range of people because the lyrics and the video really help to make your mood better if youre feeling upset of angry, i think that the video really compliments what they are saying because we see a visual representation of the things they are singing.

How important do you think this video is in the marketing of this artist?i think it is important because it is showing what they are singing about and this would interest a lot of people due to the fact that it is quite nice to see them going from pain to calm.

How much of the video is narrative and how much is performance? Is there a clear line between the two?i think this video is mostly performance, although you can see her singing the words in some scenes and she does gestures suggesting "come and get it ".

In what ways are these used; clothes, locations and colors? The clothes used in this video are all very fashionable, and very colourful to match each scene well, the dresses she wears are floaty but also quite sheer to show a hint of sexiness, the locations used are all really pretty backgrounds and locations, the colours used are really vibrant but in some scenes there is a dark setting and this makes it really interesting to watch.

What is the overall style of this video?the overall style of this video is very seductive and girly but sexy at the same time. we see a very different side to the artist as we usually used to see a very innocent side to her and this video and music really changes that stereotype.

What image is the artist trying to present?Selena Gomez is trying to present this sexy sultry attitude that we wouldn't have seen from her prior videos or films, since we are so used to seeing this artist on things such as Disney shows and making really cute girly music this particular song and video is really pushing her away from the typical music video scene we would see her in, i think she is trying to portray herself in a different light to ensure everybody who sees her sees this new girl who is an adult and who is trying to become this sexy woman doing provocative music and that she is not just a disney star anymore but that she has grown out of it.

What kind of audience is the artist trying to appeal to? I think that this is appealing a older audience than she usually appeals in her other music, i think that this would appeal to those who are from 16+ because the younger audience wouldn't really understand what she is singing about as they are not mature enough to understand that she is being sexy and acting older, also we know this is how she is portraying herself since her new film 'spring breakers' released and she advised her younger fan base not to see her new work, this shows thats he is now appealing to an older fan base and not making music for a younger audience.

How important do you think this video is in the marketing of this artist?I think this video is important because it is really showing the new image she wants to sell of herself, it is showing the way she looks now and the way she is wanting to be seen so i think it is a really important part of it, also it shows that she is now moving on and becoming older and this would be a perfect video to show that and to marketise her new look.

How much of the video is narrative and how much is performance? Is there a clear line between the two?
This video is mostly performance as we don't see her acting out the actual content of which she is singing, we just see her in random scenes.
In what ways are these used; clothes, locations and colors? The clothing that is used in this video is quite provocative at first where she has a shirt which is cut out on the sides, later on we go onto more fashionable clothing that is more covered up. The locations used seem to be an urban area of america which seems quite cool as she is sitting outside with all of her friends, the colours are all very bright making the video really fun and cool to watch.

What is the overall style of this video?the overall style is very 'cool' and 'young' where we see her in the car with her girlfriends and then we see her hanging out with all of her friends, it seems like something that people would watch and be able to see the interaction between all of the actors and the artist, it is a very relaxed and interesting video.

What image is the artist trying to present?the artist is trying to present the image of her being nicer than other females and of enjoying the time she has had with her love interest, also it is presenting youthfulness and the sort of hip hop vibe. Also she is presenting her new self to the world as this was one of the first music videos she dropped off her new album, she is showing the changes she has made both physically and musically.

What kind of audience is the artist trying to appeal to?the artist is trying to appeal to a teenage audience maybe early twenties as the lyrics in the song as those of which a early twenties late teens type of person would relate to and be able to enjoy thoroughly.
How important do you think this video is in the marketing of this artist?

i think this video is very important because it is showing the artists new image off to the world and showing what this new music is about, also it has another artist featured on it which would lead to his fan base coming and watching this video and in turn this could lead to more followers and a larger fan base for her new style and new music choice.

How much of the video is narrative and how much is performance? Is there a clear line between the two? There is a bit of both in this video so i would say that it is pretty even. We see the storyline play out in some scenes and we see the singer and the rapper both on their own saying their lines. this is effective because not only do we see the artists we see the storyline which they are speaking of.

In what ways are these used; clothes, locations and colors?the clothing that is used in this is very effective, for example when the girl the singer cheats with comes into the room she is wearing something very revealing and trashy which shows exactly who she is whereas the girlfriend is sleeping in bed and looks quite covered up, this shows the clear difference between the two helping the audience tell them apart very easily, also the locations tell us where the scenes are set and the change of locations show us that this couple have been together for a while as we see flashbacks of them together. The colours used are all different because we see darkness in some scenes and then we see light in others, this sets a clear contrast between the scenes.

What is the overall style of this video?the overall style of this video is very american based as we see them wearing things that they would so in america, also it is quite a storytelling video as we see all of the scenes come together, also i really like the way they rewinded the scenes at the beginning as if they are telling us how the artist feels about wanting to turn back time, i think it is very effective and interesting to watch.

What image is the artist trying to present?the artist is trying to present the image that some men may feel bad after cheating on their girlfriends, also it is showing how the girl at the beginning knew what was happening but just closed her eyes trying to dismiss it, maybe he is trying to show what happens in certain situations and what may go wrong and then the repercussions of it.

What kind of audience is the artist trying to appeal to?i think this is appealing both men and women because i think if a woman has been in the situation which they are speaking of this song may give her a feeling that her boyfriend may be feeling the same way, and if it was a male then they can also learn off this video so they too don't end up upset at the end of doing something which they should have not done.

How important do you think this video is in the marketing of this artist?I think it is very important for the singer because as he is not as known having Joe budden in this video would give him a lot of views as joe budden is a very famous well known rapper in the states, i think that this video would benefit the singer more than Joe budden but also having himself in the video will give him even more fame and publicity.

How much of the video is narrative and how much is performance? Is there a clear line between the two?It has a bit of both, we see Justin singing and we also see the story being performed by the actors, we see a balanced bit of both and this is effective because it keeps the audience interested.

In what ways are these used; clothes, locations and colors? They use clothing, locations and colours to show the time which each scene was set in, for example in the beginning we see a young couple in something which seems like the 60s, we can tell this through the things they are wearing, the girl is wearing a big skirt and a bandana around her neck, this is something which makes us think of a film like 'grease'. the colours used in the sad scenes are very mild and dull which shows a big contrast to the bright colours in the first scenes where the young couple are having fun and in a funhouse.

What is the overall style of this video?the overall style is very reminiscent as they have scenes of all different stages in this couples relationship, we see their whole couple life play out before our eyes in different snippets of it, this makes it a very interesting and different video since we get this mirrored feel and we get really engrossed into watching the scenes to see what will happen next.

What image is the artist trying to present?the artist is trying to present an image of love an of how things can play out, maybe he is trying to present the fact that people can grown old together but that not all things last and nothing is forever, this is shown in the end scene where we see the couple want to get back together but they end up walking through the mirror and through each other, also he could be trying to show the way maybe we don't always appreciate what we have and that we should appreciate it because when we find the one we love we should hold onto them.

What kind of audience is the artist trying to appeal to?I think that the audience for this would be people of all ages who have felt love or who are intrigued by the thought of love as we get to see the ins and outs of a relationship. also the lyrics which the singers is saying are very romantic but the video has aspects which are also rather sad which helps to make this video and song a wider range for a audience as you don't necessarily have to be in love to enjoy it.

How important do you think this video is in the marketing of this artist?I think it is very important because of the fact that Justin timberlake went away off the music scene for a while and this was one of the videos to the song in his new album 20/20 experience and this is showing the new grown up justin timberlake and i think that it is very important to show the new him through this and also it is showing the storyline which is really nice also as we get to see the storyline play out in front of us.

Infected - FINAL.

This is the final draft of my partner & I's opening. We have decided to put music over it and take out all of the speaking as we believe this would set the scene and make it seem a lot more tense ans create suspese. Also we have cut some of the scenes that we had previously as we think it will look a lot better this way because it wont be dragging the storyline along or giving away too much in the first 2 minutes of the film. We have tried to create suspense and make the audience feel like they are worried about the main characters well-being.

Costume ideas.

This is a visual protrayal of how our characters will look.
We have included why we have them wearing certain items and what it represents about their character.

Production Schedule

this is our production schedule, this is the times and locations where we filmed, we took into consideration times that would be good for both us and our crew / cast.

Film Poster

I created this poster for our film, I decided to use colours that resemble infections, like the dark green against the red seems like a bruise, this sets the mood and gives the the audience a taste of  what the film is about, I decided to make the writing white as it would contrast well against the background but not fight for attention against the colours, i think it looks sharp and to the point, in this case i also like that it is simple but sharp as it looks very nice.

Monday, 28 January 2013

Infected Rough cut.

This is our first rough cut of our film opening, we have to make the editing a bit sharper and make sure that we cut the timing down as much as possible so it fits into our time space allowed. Overall i really like the way this is coming together and it is exactly what we had in mind from the beginning of our project. This piece really captures the thriller genre and is what we were set to do. Obviously there could be things which we could have done better and we could have improved and this is what we are aiming to do in the editing process of this one.
